The attraction of Financial News Events is the quality of the presentations and so we are unashamedly fussy about whom we feature. How do we choose speakers? Naturally, they must be expert in their field, but they must also be able to present in a lively and direct way. Many speakers are recommended to us by delegates who have attended other functions. Others are those we have identified ourselves. We do not pay speakers at our events.
Moderators chair panel sessions and occasionally the whole conference programme. They are a vital part of a successful conference or seminar, setting the tone for the event, and representing Financial News on the podium. Our events are often chaired by our editors or senior journalists but from time to time we invite independent moderators, especially for more specialist topics.
They must know the subject area well, keep fair and lively debate going and be able confidently to link one speaker or session to another. They must avoid voicing their own opinions too much or allowing one speaker to dominate proceedings, and they should be able to solicit and direct questions from delegates. They are also often asked to make 'housekeeping' announcements and close with thanks to speakers and sponsors.
Speakers and moderators are often asked to join the Financial News Senior Advisory Network, an informal club of contacts who act as an industry sounding board for many of our events and coverage ideas. FNSAN members receive a complimentary subscription to the paper and other benefits, including free places at our executive dinners and social events.
