The private equity model is not easily broken, but the past year has shown just how dependent the private equity industry was on the leveraged finance market's willingness to provide cheap and ample debt due to investors’ appetite for higher yielding products.

While equity holders have held up, debt provision has since been down a rocky road. Writedowns have crippled many investment banking teams, deal volumes have been low, mezzanine finance has taken a bigger slice of the pie, in-house debt teams within private equity firms have gained momentum, and there’s been talk of private equity firms bypassing investment banks entirely.

So how will the landscape of debt provision change?
